Ensconced in infiinity

I had to laugh at myself this morning. During a mid-morning break, I looked at myself in the mirror and chuckled. Now, I always think it is good to look at yourself and laugh, but it wouldn't be evident to many people why I was laughing - on the surface, I looked pretty normal.

But my earrings - a favorite pair made by a dear friend - are silver dangles in the shape of a mobius band. And my hand-knit shawl is also in the shape of a mobius band with a hood attached - hard to explain, but fun. I made it myself and it was an unusual piece to knit as it is knit as a mobius band as well (not as a rectangle with one twist added and then the ends connected). Knitting something like this - which ostensibly has one surface - challenged my math brain and my spatial sense at the same time. At one level, I had to give both of those up and just follow the directions and see how it turned out. And it did!! When I try and explain it to others, I usually say that it starts in the middle and adds on each side, with a full "knitting round" being additions on both sides of the middle (but just one circle).

There's certainly an "aha" moment there in just following directions. In trust. In faith. In NOT trying so hard to figure everything out ahead of time. In allowing that just seeing how things turn out might be enough. Knowing that all I have to do is the knitting - there will be a result. Will it be what I think? Well, if I don't know what to think, that's hard to say. But it most certainly will be.

So, an obsession with mobius bands? Maybe for today. Probably means I'll be adding infinity symbols to my mandalas again. Or I'll work with that somehow. My mandalas have been all over the board of late. But I really enjoy doing them - and will add them in the next post.

My obsession - or delight, really - is in the intersection of math and the real world. No one but me might know that I am ensconced in mobius bands (infinity symbols) today. It doesn't matter - except to me. No one but me is cluing in to this being my 47th year - 47 is prime - and so I'm owning that as the prime of my life. I like it when these "coincidences" happen - when math and life coincide.
